Exclusive chat with rising star Joe Kruel about being indie, his favorite song he's ever written and what's to come.
Welcome to Mob Magazine - DELUXE ARTIST. We use this platform to highlight indie talent we see Mastering Overcoming Boundaries.
"I was making music back in the early 2000s before the internet really popped off and back then it was a much harder grind.."
We have the pleasure of sitting down with Joel Kruel, please give us a little background on your musical career and journey. When did you get started and what inspired you to pursue music seriously?
JOE KRUEL: I've always had a love for music and poetry. Originally, I wanted to be a DJ and that's what I was doing all through high school. The summer after I graduated a few of my friends had set up a recording studio in their basement. I saw them putting out mixtapes and rocking shows. That made me want to get in on that because it looked fun as hell.
If you weren’t doing music, what career would you have right now?
JOE KRUEL: I love the entertainment industry so I would definitely be involved in it one way or another. In fact, I stopped making music for 6 years and ended up being a radio personality for an internet radio station til my love for making music made be put my focus back into that side of things. So I'd probably be a radio DJ or maybe even get into making films.
What’s it like being indie? Do you prefer it over possibly getting signed?
JOE KRUEL: I was making music back in the early 2000s before the internet really popped off and back then it was a much harder grind. These days the internet has made being an indie artist an amazing experience. I love the idea of being indie. I honestly don't think I'd want to be signed to a label except my own. I'm a bit of a control freak so being able to have the final say in everything I do is a must.
What are you currently working on?
JOE KRUEL: Since I took a long hiatus from music and am just now coming back with a new pseudonym and sound my main focus has just been putting out a new single every 3-4 weeks to gain traction and rebuild my fanbase. With that being said I got some real heat coming so be on the look out.
What’s your song writing process?
JOE KRUEL: I like to sit in the dark with the beat on full blast, repeating it over and over while I smoke a blunt. I'll close my eyes and just vibe out to the beat and let it speak to me. When the blunt is done I'll start writing.
What are some goals you are wanting to achieve in the upcoming 2-3 years involving your music or any other ventures?
JOE KRUEL: My goals in the next 2-3 years is to expand my fanbase big enough to ensure longevity and bargaining power in the entertainment industry. I aim to build my own label with a few select artist and expand my brand into various aspects of media. I plan to have my hands in radio, film, marketing, photography, and more. Making music is something I love to do and will always continue to do but business wise for me it's a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
What would you say are some challenges you face as a creative?
JOE KRUEL: Creativity is the challenge. With the music and social media markets so overly saturated with content the real challenge is creating something that's not only quality but also unique and enticing enough to grab attention. It's like trying to figure out the algorithm for societies next wave. It's a tough task but can also be very freeing when you allow yourself to push past your own comforts in order to surprise yourself in what you created.
What are some of your dream collaborations?
JOE KRUEL: I have a very eclectic taste in music so I have many dream collaborations from all over the spectrum of music genres but if it comes down to just HipHop I'd have to say Tech N9ne, Snow Tha Product, Joyner Lucas, Vinnie Paz, R.A The Ruggedman, Methodman and Nas to name a few.
FINAL QUESTION :
What is one of your favorite songs you’ve ever created and why?
JOE KRUEL: Back in 2011 I released a song called January 3rd. It's a song in remembrance of my grandfather who helped raise me. For me that song is the closure I needed to get through the pain of the loss. That song will always mean more to me than any other song I've ever done. I re-released the song on a compilation album I put out in 2019 when I was toying with the idea of getting back to music. So if you'd like to hear it go to your favorite streaming platform and find it in my discography.
